Puget Brass Academy

Puget Brass Academy is an opportunity for student and young adult brass musicians to learn about the British Brass Band tradition and deepen their understanding of brass technique and performance in an inclusive and non-competitive community. Students will experience instrument-specific sectionals and a masterclass culminating in a performance alongside Puget Brass at our annual Brass Bonanza event on April 27th, 2024.

The Academy Bands will be led by Erin Keeton-Howard and Elizabeth McDaniel. Erin is a Seattle-based composer, musician, and educator and Elizabeth is Puget Brass principal trombone and Managing Director.

Puget Brass Academy Band is open to brass students from 7th grade - 21 years of age.

Registration opens October 2023 and closes March 31, 2024.

Rehearsal and Performance Details:

  • Saturday April 13, 2024: Rainier Band (grade 10-age 21), 9am-12pm, UCUCC 4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105, group rehearsal and sectionals led by local professional musicians (snacks provided)

  • Saturday April 20, 2024: Rainer and Baker Bands (grade 7-age 21), 9am-2pm, UCUCC 4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105, group rehearsals, sectionals led by Puget Brass members, masterclass given by Seattle Symphony tubist John DiCesare (lunch and snacks provided)

  • Tuesday April 23, 2024: All Puget Brass Academy, 7 - 9pm, group rehearsal with Puget Brass Academy and Puget Brass, UCUCC 4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105

  • Saturday April 27, 2024: Brass Bonanza concert, 2pm, UCUCC 4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105, collaborative concert with Puget Brass Academy, Puget Brass, and special guests

Born and raised in southern California, Elizabeth moved to Seattle to attend graduate school at University of Washington in 2014. Since graduating with her Masters degree in Trombone Performance, she has formed a successful private lessons studio, established a freelance career with local performing groups, and is teaching consistently in both private and public schools. As president of Puget Brass, she helped coordinate a new Oktoberfest event, created an updated website, and organized new venues and opportunities for the band. She now serves as Managing Director of Puget Brass. In 2023, Elizabeth organized the debut of the Puget Brass Academy, a youth brass ensemble for students in the greater Seattle area. Elizabeth lives in Lynnwood, WA with her husband, two kids, and dog Xena.

Erin Keeton-Howard is a Seattle-based musician and music educator who is passionate about bringing people together through music. Currently Erin is the Director of Bands at The Northwest School, Director of the Seattle Symphonic Band at North Seattle College, and Co-Founder/ Director of Formation Wind Band (Seattle's all-female wind band).
Erin graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Music Education from the University of Missouri and holds a M.A. in Music Education with emphasis in Conducting from the University of Washington. A St. Louis native, Erin fell in love with the PNW when she moved here in 2014 to attend the University of Washington. Erin resides in Mountlake Terrace with her wife Felicia and two lovable pups, Tucker and Edna Boone.
