Kathy Medema

Kathy Medema has been a band director for 37 years in Texas and Puget Sound at every level from elementary to high school. Her father was a private piano, voice and organ teacher and surely inherited her love of teaching music from him! After graduating from Arlington (Texas) High School, she received her Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees at East Texas State University where she majored on Euphonium and minored on Horn, also playing bass trombone in the Trombone Choir. Kathy started a new band directing position in the fall of 2015 at Haller Middle School in Arlington. Previously she taught band and orchestra at Totem Middle School in the Federal Way School District and had been there for 13 years, and was also the Secondary Music Coordinator for the district. Previous positions were at Thomas Jefferson HS and Kentwood High School. Before that she taught elementary band in Dallas, TX and was assistant band director at Boswell HS and Wayside MS in Saginaw, TX.

She has played just about every brass instrument and percussion in many ensembles in the area (Highline Community Symphonic Band, Washington Wind Symphony, Tacoma Concert Band among others) and is excited to be back with Puget Brass. Kathy also is a regular "sub" in the trombone section of Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra. She resides in Mukilteo with her wife Janelle and their cat, Cricket. Kathy looks forward to retiring in 5 years and eventually they will "snowbird" at their 2nd home in Tucson, AZ.
