Tenor Horn
Bob Read

Bob’s father was a brass bandsman from the Tacoma area. He was the primary influence in Bob’s early musical development. Bob and his father would often listen to band records together. Bob went to elementary school knowing that he wanted to play the French horn; much to the surprise of the music teacher, who had never started a student on that instrument. While in junior and senior high, Bob played in the Seattle All City Band and Orchestra. In 1966, Bob joined the Thunderbirds Junior Drum and Bugle Corps. He then moved to the Seattle Imperials Junior Drum and Bugle Corps in 1968, and performed with them through 1971. After aging out in 1972, Bob performed with the Grenadiers Senior Drum and Bugle Corps for a couple of years. Bob then stopped playing until in 1983, Bob joined the Boeing Employees Concert Band. He was invited to play with the Highline Community Band and then with the newly formed Federal Way Community Band. Bob still performs with the Federal Way band, now known as the South Sound Symphonic Band. He is also a founding member of the Quintessence Brass Ensemble, in which he remains active. Somewhere along the way, Bob took up the bugle again and performed with the Northwest Venture Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. This is where he met Garry Wolfe, the founder of the PugetBrass. Bob joined the PugetBrass in late 2000, where he plays the alto horn. Bob also performed with the Seattle Brass Attack, a group of drum and bugle enthusiasts affiliated with the Seattle Cascades Junior Drum and Bugle Corps. In 2009 Bob was asked to play a summer concert series with the Tacoma Concert Band and is still performing with them regularly.

Bob and his wife, Janet, met while playing in the Federal Way Community Band together. They married in 1988, and have three grown children and two grand daughters. Bob celebrated his thirty-fifth anniversary working for Boeing as a journeyman machinist. Bob and Janet live in the Brookdale area of Pierce County.
